There was a time, around 2006, when everyone you spoke to was spouting The Secret. People were manifesting left, right, and center, and everyone knew about the Law of Attraction.
Then, the phenomenon died down, shed it’s cult status, and took a back seat in the minds of many.
The Law of Attraction
The Law of Attraction is one of the universal laws that was made popular by Wallace Wattles in 1910. His book The Science of Getting Rich was the inspiration for The Secret. In fact the New Thought Movement has been in existence in the US since the 1800s, when Phineas Quimby offered the theory of “mind over matter”. He taught that the mind was responsible for disease, and if a person opened their mind to God’s wisdom, any illness could be overcome.
The New Thought Movement grew into the 1900s with help from such authors as Wallace Wattles, Napoleon Hill, Charles Haanel, and Thomas Troward.
Rhonda Byrne‘s book and movie, The Secret, brought the Law of Attraction to the masses.
Now, many of us still use affirmations, creative visualization, and positive thinking to help to attain our goals. It’s very easy to create a tool such as a vision board to keep a visual of your dreams in front of you. There are apps that you can download to your phone, computer, or tablet. And those who practice the laws affirm that if you act as if you have already received the thing you want, you will get it.
If you ask, will you receive?
I believe that what The Secret lacked was the explanation that you really do have to do some work! It was said that the Universe is like a huge direct mail catalog – you just send out your order and whatever you want comes to you. This led to a lot of people sitting in their living rooms expecting bunches of money to fall into their laps. That’s not how the Law of Attraction works, folks! You have to give something of equal value to receive the thing that you want. Yes, my friends, there is work to do!
You can try all you like to manifest that supermodel figure, but if you think it will happen while you just sit around scoffing donuts all day, I’ve got a bridge I’d like to sell you!
I’ve heard the exchange explained like this: it’s like expecting heat from a fire before you throw on the wood. You say “give me heat and I will give you more wood”, when the fire is saying “throw on more wood, and I will give you more heat”!

More universal laws
I will talk more about the laws in future posts. The Law of Attraction was the law made popular by The Secret, but there are other laws that govern the universe:
- the Law of Mentalism
- the Law of Correspondence
- the Law of Vibration (Law of Attraction)
- the Law of Polarity
- the Law of Rhythm
- the Law of Cause and Effect
- the Law of Gender
Some will argue that there are 12 laws, but let’s start by concentrating on the seven listed here.
I also look forward to sharing stories of your experiences with the universal laws. Drop me a line if you have a story to share!
